Over 100 students from St Augustine's College, Trinity Anglican School, Trinity Bay State High School, Holy Spirit College, Good Counsel College, Bently Park College, Innisfail State College, Kuranda District School and Djarragun College attended our second Brekkie with the Tradies held in conjunction with TAFE Queensland. Students enjoyed Speakers from Kick On, GMH Electrical, MAE Refrigeration, Northern Innovations, Norweld and Tablelands Regional Council representing electrical, fabrication, refrigeration and building industries. All of the speakers gave the students an insight into not only their industry but how they cam e to be where they are today.
On Thursday 17 March, nine of our students attended another BLA event, the annual Brekkie with the Tradies! This event occurred at the Tropics Restaurant at TAFE, which was staffed by the 2022 Cert II Hospitality students. It is always a joy to spot our students at these events, working like professional staff. The attendees from SSHS heard from electricians, FIFO workers, diesel mechanics, builders, business owners, a plumbing apprentice and the only female refrigeration technician in Cairns. They received advice on how to approach an employer, what school subjects and life skills are best suited to a career in trade, what the appealing aspects of each trade are, and some fantastic life advice from each speaker! The SSHS students represented our school with pride, and while this may be a biased opinion, I am confident they were the best presented group there. At the end of the presentation, our students were able to speak directly with the tradies and I think there could be some work experience and job opportunities that have come out of those conversations.
