Industry Breakfasts

Our Breakfast Seminars have been running for 25 years. Their topics tend to vary from year to year depending on what career pathways are trending.

We organise a high profile speaker to visit to Cairns and then they invite schools to participate in the Breakfasts. In providing a Breakfast the students only miss the morning session at school (and not the whole day).

Our aim is to offer seminars that will extend and enrich the curriculum students are offered at school and thereby giving them a deeper learning experience/s and deeper understandings. E.g the Annual  Breakfast with the Law - Students are invited to debate a highly contentious or complex area of the law.

In 2019 our Young Entrepreneurs Breakfast has a different flavour - this is more about preparing students to develop enterprise skills, which are highly sought after by industry at present and into the future The JCU Health Careers Breakfast is about exposing students to the array of courses and careers in the health/medical industries.

JCU Careers in Health Breakfast

On Friday 8 March 2019, 220 students and teachers joined us at the Business Liaison Association's and James Cook University's Careers in Health Breakfast at Rydges Esplanade. The students listened to a panel of 5 JCU delegates covering industries in Heath like Pharmacy, Speech Therapy, Pathology, Dentistry and Medical Research. They shared their career experiences and explained why they chose that field.

The students then formed working groups to formulate questions with the assistance of their teachers, that they then presented to the panel. The students did well as the questions were well thought out and covered a range of topics. The message that I thought was most beneficial was when Dr Jennings said to the students that "it was OK to let your studies and your career MORPH into new areas and to just roll with it to see where it will take you, as his had taken him all over the world!"

Thank you to the Team at Rydges Esplanade, nothing is ever to much hassle for you guys, you are amazing. Thank you to the teachers and schools for participating - we hope that your students enjoyed the morning. Carli, Cameron, David and the team at JCU - always a pleasure to work with you to coordinate such a successful event. To my team... Kym and Angela - Thank you and what a way to start 2019, I am so excited...

Young Entrepreneurs Breakfast

Thursday 14 March 2019, I had the pleasure of meeting a beautiful lady who has achieved so much at the young age of 22 - Ms Chelsea Phillips, who presented to 160 local students at our Young Entrepreneurs Breakfast at Rydges Esplanade Resort Cairns proudly sponsored by TheSPACE!

Chelsea shared her entrepreneurial story of achievements and failures and how they have molded her into the business woman that she is today. She explained the lessons that she has learnt from the success, the failure and the struggles faced with being an Entrepreneur. She encouraged the students to take risks, believe in their dreams and if you fall down, get up, reset and go again. "Don't be afraid to take every opportunity that presents itself and see where it takes you and your career. Not everything has to be planned." she said. My takeaway was - To be successful in today's workforce, you need GRIT, PASSION and a lot of HARD WORK.

Thank you to our wonderful sponsors TheSpace, the teachers, and students who joined us for Breakfast. We hope that you enjoyed the breakfast and found inspiration in Chelsea's words. A special thank you to Ms Christine Clifford, from the Space for her advice and official closing.
