Last Thursday students at Mossman State High school enjoyed an engaging presentation by young entrepreneur Scott Millar of BOP Industries. Year Nine students (120 Students) heard how Scott had started his first business enterprise when he was their age. As part of a school project, he made and sold customised laser-cut key tags at his local market. By the time he finished school, Scott was the CEO of a company producing holographic displays, with some very high-profile clients. Scott talked to students as ‘digital natives’ who have grown up with developing and innovative technologies. His message is that students can make their own business opportunities by developing their interests and thinking in new ways about problems. Scott emphasised the importance of teamwork and making connections. Young business people are using social media networking in positive ways to reach out to global audiences. His presentation also demonstrated the power of face-to-face interactions, with students able to discuss the presentation among themselves and to find out more by asking questions. Now we know that if he had not gone into business, Scott would have worked towards becoming an airline pilot. He certainly has inspired us be high-flyers on our own path. Many thanks from Mossman State High School to Scott and the Business Liaison Association, Cairns, for sponsoring his visit.
