2021 JCU Mediation Competition

2021 JCU MEDIATION COMPETITION

 

Mediation is a rapidly developing area in the legal industry.

As part of this competition a Zoom session with trained mediators from the FNQ Dispute Resolution Centre will be held from 3:45 to 4:45pm one week prior to mediation on Wednesday 4 August 2021. This session is for students interested in participating in this competition, but it is not mandatory!

Previewing notes concerning mediation will be sent to all participating schools two [2] weeks prior to the competition after Expression of Interest has been sent. Please note, students will only be required to do some of the steps in the mediation process. Scoring will be centred on each team’s ability to direct the discussion between disputants in a neutral and supportive manner.  

Rules for Mediation Competition

  • Three to Four [3 or 4] students per team. Each school one team/ Maximum 6 teams. Students can be from Year 9 Civics to senior Legal Studies.
  • Each team will mediate a set issue between two disputants after hearing each party’s statements [versions of the dispute].
  • Judges will be looking for a team’s neutrality and supportive manner, and their ability to paraphrase and reframe the discussion to maintain productive discussion between the parties.
  • A Registration Fee of $88 (GST incl) will be charged per school.  BLA will invoice each school.
