Ports North Environmental Awards

Hosted by the Business Liaison Association (BLA) in partnership with local schools and community stakeholders in Cairns, North Queensland.

Bridging pathways between education, training and employment.

CONDITIONS OF ENTRY

The awards are open to senior secondary students in years eleven (11) and twelve (12) currently participating in biology, marine science, chemistry, geography, earth science, and environmental science or other science subjects. They must have attained a high achievement or better on the school assessment and who wish to pursue a career in science or its many related fields.

The assignment shall be to conduct a student experiment or research investigation, such that students need to respond to a claim, develop a research question and use primary and/or secondary data to answer that question. This may comprise a field study, laboratory, research investigation, classroom experiment or literature-based investigation work. This is to be carried out to demonstrate students’ understanding of land uses, waterways, catchment health and linkages of creeks, rivers, estuary, beach, and oceans.

OVERVIEW

The Environmental award is hosted by the Business Liaison Association, in partnership with Ports North promoting research and the studies to:

• foster a greater awareness of issues affecting the local and regional coastal environment,
• promote and encourage careers within the environmental and science industries, and,
• give students experience in collecting samples, conducting a research investigation, and analysing environmental subject matter,

First Prize: $1000

Second Prize: $700

Third Prize: $400 x2
