JCU-Newman Interschool Maths Competition

James Cook University and Newman Catholic College are proud to host an interschool maths competition for talented students in Years 7, 8 and 9 from across the Cairns region. The competition is open to all secondary schools in the Cairns region (Catholic, Education Queensland and Independent schools). Nominations are due on Thursday 24th April. The competitioin is then held on Thursday 15 May at 1.15 pm for a 1.30 pm start at JCU.

Competition Details:

Numbers:            Schools are to nominate nine students in total:

  • 3 x students from Year 7.
  • 3 x students from Year 8.
  • 3 x students from Year 9.

There will be three different competitions on the same day for talented students in the Cairns region:

  • Competition A is open to Year 7 students.
  • Competition B is open to Year 8 students.  
  • Competition C is open to Year 9 students. 

James Cook University lecturers have designed the competitions and will be facilitating the competitions during the day. Competition questions are carefully crafted to challenge and assess the participants' problem-solving abilities, mathematical knowledge, and critical thinking skills.

Students will work individually to complete twenty questions within a forty-minute timeframe. Participants who emerge as winners will be honoured with well-deserved recognition and prizes, celebrating their participation and achievements.
