INTERSCHOOL MATHEMATICS COMPETITION

Our Interschool Mathematics Competition Sponsors

Hosted by the Business Liaison Association (BLA) in partnership with local schools and community stakeholders in Cairns, North Queensland. 

The Business Liaison Association extends its sincere appreciation to James Cook University, Queensland Association of Mathematics Teachers, Catholic Education and Newman College for their valued sponsorship of the Interschool Mathematics Competition Award.

Through their support, we continue to strengthen pathways between education, training, and employment — empowering the next generation of agricultural professionals across Far North Queensland.

Overview

The JCU–Newman Interschool Mathematics Competition 2026 provides an opportunity for talented mathematics students from across the Cairns region to demonstrate their problem-solving skills, mathematical knowledge, and critical thinking abilities.

Three competitions will be held simultaneously, with students competing individually within their year level.

Competition Details

  • Date: Wednesday, 6 May 2026 (Week 3, Term 2)
    Arrival: 1:15 pm for a 1:30 pm start
    Dismissal: 3:30 pm

  • Venue:
    • James Cook University
    • Nguma-bada Campus
    • McGregor Road, Smithfield
  • Rooms:
    • Competition A & B – Room A3-001
    • Competition C – Room A3-002
  • Students should eat lunch before arriving, as only light refreshments will be provided during the event.

Conditions of Entry

The competition is open to all secondary schools in the Cairns region, including:

  • Catholic schools
  • Education Queensland schools
  • Independent schools

To be eligible:

  • Students must be enrolled in Year 7, 8, or 9.
  • Each school may nominate nine students in total, consisting of:
    • 3 × Year 7 students
    • 3 × Year 8 students
    • 3 × Year 9 students
  • All competitions are individual competitions.

Teachers from participating schools are encouraged to attend and accompany their students during the event.

Students may bring:

  • Rulers
  • Pencils
  • Erasers

Calculators are not permitted. All other materials required for the competition will be provided.

 

Prize & Bursaries

Students who achieve the highest results in each competition will receive recognition and prizes, celebrating their participation and achievement in the competition.

Closing Date: Friday 24th April, 2026
