Excellence in Visual Arts Sponsors

Hosted by the Business Liaison Association (BLA) in partnership with local schools and community stakeholders in Cairns, North Queensland. 

The Business Liaison Association extends its sincere appreciation to Catholic Education Dioceses of Cairns and Reach Bently Park College for their valued sponsorship of the Excellence in Visual Arts.

Through their ongoing support, we continue to strengthen pathways between education, training, and employment, empowering the next generation of students and future professionals across Far North Queensland.

 

Overview

The Visual Arts Awards recognise outstanding Year 12 students from Cairns and the Far North Queensland region who demonstrate excellence in creative practice, technical skill, and artistic expression.

These prestigious awards support students intending to pursue tertiary study in Visual Arts or related creative industries in 2027, encouraging continued development of artistic practice and contribution to the arts sector.

 

Eligibility and Conditions of Entry

Schools may nominate Year 12 students demonstrating excellence in Visual Arts.

To be eligible, students must:

  • Submit a digital portfolio demonstrating achievement in one or more Visual Arts areas
  • Demonstrate clear intent to pursue tertiary study (University or TAFE)
  • Achieve a minimum B standard (or equivalent ATAR expectation) in one or more Visual Arts subjects (QCE General, Applied, or TAFE)
  • Demonstrate participation in school, regional, or state exhibition programs (e.g. Receive/Respond, ENERGY)
  • Demonstrate high-level making and production skills, along with a clear understanding of the value of arts practice

All submissions must be the original work of the student.

 

Portfolio Guidelines

Portfolios should be submitted in PowerPoint or PDF format and must include:

  • Cover Page
    • Student Name
    • School
  • Artist Statement (maximum 300 words) outlining:
    • Why and how you make your art (your art practice)
    • What art means to you (your passions)
    • Your aspirations for a future arts career (your direction)
  • 10–15 pages/slides showcasing your artwork and practice
  • Each artwork must include:
    • Title
    • Date
    • Medium
    • Size
  • Inclusion of process work (where appropriate) to demonstrate:
    • Concept development
    • Creativity
    • Technical skills
    • Production processes
  • Clear distinction of the student’s own ideas and artistic voice
  • Evidence of originality and creativity across selected works

 

Prize & Bursaries

First Place                         $500

Runner Up                        $300

Encouragement Award     $150

Please note: Final prize amounts may vary from those listed above, depending on sponsorship contributions and the number of applicants.
