Report on the Author Workshops with John Heffernan
A perfect setting, motivated students, good food, excited teachers and a dynamic author.
On May 18, a troupe of 30 enthusiastic Atherton High students from Years 8, 9 and 10 arrived at Halloran’s Hill. A perfect setting, motivated students, good food, excited teachers and a dynamic author were the ingredients that made the day a rewarding and memorable experience for all involved.
John Heffernan, the visiting author, conducted three sessions with the students. He began by explaining that stories can begin with a simple idea so students had fun writing ‘I remember….’. In session two they moved on to experience the Writing Process. Staff were pleased to hear John remind students of the importance of editing as part of the writing process. John shared with the students that he had re-read Marty’s Shadow 30 times as part of his editing of that particular novel! The last session centred around an exercise in suspense.
Staff were in awe of John’s ability to inspire the students to write, well into the dying embers of the day. Students wrote profusely and shared their responses aloud to the tasks. It was fascinating for all to share in the variety of styles. John’s feedback was always constructive and supportive.
Since the workshop, several students have continued to write and share their work. In future planning for these events, Atherton High will look at follow-up activities within the school and possibly between schools.
