Friday 29 May, 2009 saw the doors open on our 8th Annual Careers and Education Expo, the major Careers Event for the Far North Queensland region. Held at the Fred Moule Pavilion, Cairns Showgrounds, we received lots of positive verbal feedback from exhibitors with the way students approached the exhibitors, had intelligent questions to ask, and were listening well to answers. The venue got the thumbs up from exhibitors, and the Woree Student Helpers: 2 boys who assisted with moving 3,000 bottles of water from the fridge to the entrance throughout the day, and 2 girls who did the best job yet of ferrying cups of coffee/tea and lunches to exhibitors who could not get away from their stalls, also got a big thank you from the overwhelmed exhibitors. TAFE had great interactive displays with a competition to see who could get the tyres off a go-cart the fastest, welding, bricklaying, cake decorating, baristas, hairdressing, manicures etc. College of Australian Training were also inundated with people wanting their hair styled. Tourism Too Deadly was a great hit with the Indigenous students, who could have their photo taken in the display, and it was then printed and given to them inside a brochure for them to take away. Many exhibitors sent Indigenous staff/representatives which we encourage every year, and it is starting to pay off with numbers increasing. This year over 3,100 students attended, booked in to arrive at staggered intervals, with additional students arriving at different times throughout the day. Thanks to everyone who helped out and lent moral support, especially the Rotary volunteers - it is a very big day for all those who are there - marshalling students, marshalling buses, handing out handbooks/water bottles, cleaning up, helping with lunches/teas/coffees, staffing the Rotary food van, directing exhibitors, answering questions, putting out bushfires and generally enjoying the buzz. Now on to the 2010 Expo - watch this space for dates and further information. Chris Jenkins |
